Venkatesh and Hema in their yogashala
|
Venkatesh is a thirty
six year old,
mostly self-taught teacher whose eyes shine with dedication to his calling. The range of
offerings from he and his wife, Hema, can complement your astanga vinyasa practice nicely,
and an increasing number of western students are now coming to Mysore specifically to
study at the Atma Vikasa. Venkatesh, a very advanced practitioner, has developed his own
system of ten asana series, so all levels of practice are catered for. Venkatesh manages
to oversee students as they progress at different rates. Class sizes are kept small, so
you get a lot of individual attention here. Venkatesh’s teaching style is dignified
and thorough. Unlike the other teachers, he rarely adjusts by touching his students, and
women are expected to dress modestly - leggings beyond the knee and a long T-shirt.
Note: Unlike the other teachers in Mysore, Venkatesh does not teach
ashtanga vinyasa, but his own system, which he calls Atma Vikasa. |
|
Asana classes are
held in the mornings, Mondays-Saturdays and cost $100 a month.
Students wax lyrically about Venkatesh's special backbending course ($
250 a month), and an advanced backbending course is also on offer. The
backbending classes are held in the evening. They are very demanding,
and if you are doing a backbending class in conjunction with a daily
ashtanga vinyasa practice, be prepared to spend much of your day
resting up. Other courses on offer include pranayama, kryas, yoga
sutras, Sanskrit chanting and yoga philosophy. The full pranayama
course takes two months and costs $ 380. The first few days of the
course are spent learning to sit properly, then you will be led very
slowly through a few basic pranayamas. Unlike Iyengar, Venkatesh
doesn’t teach breath retention to beginners, and at the end of
the course, you will be given a progression to follow and told to come
back after a year of daily practice to learn more about bandhas and
kumbacha. For those who want to try everything, a six weeks "unified"
course covers most of the content of the asanas, pranayama, krya,
bodybuilding (a flowing system of exercise aimed at building up
strength) and massage course in six weeks. A number of teacher training
courses (asana, backbending or pranayama) are also available. They take
4 to 6 weeks each to complete (with 2 to 3 hours of daily practice plus
some theory or teaching practice in the afternoon) and cost $ 750. An 8
weeks universal teacher training programme, including asana, pranayama,
philosophy, etc is usually held once a year. If you complete the course
to Venkatesh’s satisfaction, you will be awarded certification
which allows you to use the Atma Vikasa name in your own country.
Venkatesh’s speciality is yoga therapy, and he offers a 14 weeks
yoga therapist training program. Sincere seekers are welcome to contact
Venkatesh at atmavikasa@eth.net for more information on his
courses. As the Atma Vikasa centre is increasingly popular, it is recommended to book
ahead of time. Another downturn of popularity is that prices of courses
are on the increase... Still, you get good individual attention and
quality tuition for your money.
If you are doing a teacher training or unified course, it is advisable to stay close to
the Atma Vikasa centre to avoid having to travel back and forth a couple of times a day.
Venkatesh and Hema are now travelling regularly to the UK and Ireland to teach their Atma
Vikasa system.

Sri K Patthabi Jois
|
Ashtanga
Vinyasa Grand Guru Patthabi Jois, or Guruji as his students usually call him, hardly needs
an introduction, for he is now one of the world’s most famous yoga teachers.
After many years in his old shala in Laksmipuram, eighty eight year old Patthabi Jois,
now operates from a new yoga shala, with a large and bright practice
space in the well-to-do suburb of Gokalam.
All levels, from the absolute beginner to the most advanced returning
practitioner are catered for. Practice begins at 6am with space for
about 25-30 students at a time. As the first group finishes up
the next fills the spots. If you like to watch others practicing you
may sit there for an hour, otherwise wait time is usually less than 20
minutes. Teaching here is the traditional “Mysore”
style or self practice. Every student learns the sequence of postures
at their own pace. If you are new to the practice and do not know the
sequence or have difficulty in poses, you will receive attention as is
required. Those more familiar with the series will be let practice on.
Practice is normally every morning except Saturdays, full and new moon
days and Hindu festivals.
The monthly fee is US$350 with an additional $200 registration fee the
first month you come, so you pay $550 for the first month and $350 for
every month after that. To get the most out of your time there, a three
month stay is recommended. You can register from 4:30-5:30pm, Monday
to Friday. Bring a passport photo. Though many people just turn up, if you intend to study at the Ashtanga Research
Institute, it is polite to send a letter stating when you will be arriving and for how
long you intend to study. Note that Patthabi Jois now demands that
people studying with him do not to study any yoga related course with
any other teacher for the time they are in Mysore.

Sheshadri in Urdhva Kukutasana
|
Although he has been
teaching in Mysore since 1994, it's only a few years ago that a few westerners
discovered Sheshadri, a kind and generous man in his fifties.
A former student of BNS
Iyengar, Sheshadri teaches ashtanga vinyasa at the Mysore Mandala Yoga Shala (opposite the Sudharma
house). He gives instructions
in broken English, demonstrates postures (perhaps too often: he was an international yoga
champion) and gives strong but sensitive adjustments. Practice is every day except Moon
days. Other courses on offer include a comprehensive pranayama course and a krya course. A
one month course will set you back Rs 7000.
Note that Sheshadri's classes are the only place
in Mysore where you can "drop in" and pay by the class (all the other
teachers ask you to commit for at least one month).
See the
Mysore Mandala website for more details.
